WELCOME TO THE
1. Prepare Your Supplies: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Gather your vial of medication and sterile syringe with needle.
2. Prepare the Vial: Remove the vial cap to expose the rubber stopper. Clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab. Allow it to dry completely.
3. Prepare the Syringe and Needle: Pull back the plunger of the syringe to draw air into the syringe equal to the volume of medication you need (e.g., if you need 10 units, draw 10 units of air). The number on the syringe indicates the amount of units.
4. Draw the Medication: Insert the needle through the center of the rubber stopper on the vial.
Push the plunger to inject the air into the vial. This creates pressure inside the vial, making it easier to draw the medication. With the needle still in the vial, turn the vial upside down while holding it by the neck.
Pull back the plunger to draw the correct amount of medication into the syringe. Pull back slowly to avoid bubbles. If air bubbles form, gently tap the syringe to bring them to the top, then push the plunger in slightly to remove the air. Be careful not to expel medication from the syringe when doing this.
5. Prepare the Injection Site: Choose an injection site on your abdomen. Use the left or right side of your abdomen about 2 inches away from your belly button. Clean the area with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
6. Administer the Injection: Pinch the skin at the injection site to create a fold. Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle (straight in) into the pinched fold of skin. Push the plunger to inject the medication slowly and steadily. Remove the needle from your skin.
7. Dispose of Materials: Carefully recap needles and syringes in the trash immediately. Dispose of any used alcohol swabs in the trash.
8. Rotate Injection Sites: To prevent irritation or lumps under the skin, alternate between the left and right sides of your abdomen with each injection.
Important Tips:
1. Never reuse needles or syringes.
2. Do not inject into areas with scars, bruises, or irritated skin.
3. Do not warm medication in a microwave or hot water prior to injecting.
4. If you miss a dose, inject it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose—do not double up.
5. Always use a new, sterile needle and syringe for each injection.
6. Do not use the vial if the medication appears discolored, cloudy, or contains particles. Consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
